Orofacial Myology: A Crash Course for Dental Professionals

Course Description: This two hour introductory course will give dental professionals an overview of the basic principles and science of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy. Join Angie as she shares the history of Oral Myofunctional Therapy in dentistry, gives insight into current treatment of myofunctional disorders and delivers a unique and masterful take on ways to use therapy collaboratively to prevent future airway issues in your patients.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to do the following:

  • Understand normal vs. abnormal Oral Rest Posture.
  • Learn the role of the tongue and facial muscles in orofacial development.
  • Know the three most common contributors to Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders.
  • Gain confidence in screening patients for Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders.
  • Know when to refer for Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT).

Course Presenter: Angie Lehman, RDH, COM
Angie Lehman is an IAOM Certified Orofacial Myologist (COM) who has been exclusively practicing Orofacial Myology since 2012 in York, Pennsylvania. She runs one of America’s most successful and well- known private practices, Oral Myofunctional Therapy of York. Angie is a highly sought-after educator for medical, dental and allied health professionals and she is passionate to encourage all health disciplines to work collaboratively and to better understand oral function and craniofacial development and to incorporate therapy into their specific areas of care.

Diagnosis and Management of Common Oral Lesions: A Case-based Review

Course Description: This four hour session will review the diagnosis and management of some of the more commonly encountered oral mucosal and radiographic pathologies in clinical practice. The first portion of the course will review oral prencancerous lesions, such as leukoplakia, erythropkakia, proliferative verrucous leukoplakia, and actinic cheilitis, among other entities. In addition, different clinical presentations of oral cancer will be discussed. The second hour of the course will focus on oral manifestations of infectious pathologies (viral, fungal, bacterial) and autoimmune conditions (lichen planus, pemphigoid, pemphigus), as well as conditions that may be confused with these entities, such as geographic tongue, coated tongue, oral manifestations of xerostomia, and burning mouth syndrome. The third portion of the course will review mucosal and radiographic pathologies seen most frequently in the pediatric population. The final portion of the course will discuss commonly encountered radiographic lesions in everyday clinical practice. For each entity, the path to diagnosis will be explained, and, when applicable, biopsy site selection techniques will be reviewed. The session also will focus on different topical and systemic medications that can be used in management of some of these conditions.

Course Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Diagnose oral mucosal and radiographic pathologies frequently encountered in clinical practice.
  2. Discuss the different topical and systemic therapies available for management of these conditions.
  3. Describe the role of biopsy in diagnosis and identify appropriate biopsy sites for different conditions.

Course Presenter: Scott M. Peters, DDS
Dr. Peters is an Associate Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at Geisinger Health System. He received his B.A. in History from Columbia University, his D.D.S. from Columbia University, and completed his post- graduate training in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology from Columbia University/New York Presbyterian Hospital. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, a fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, and the recipient of the Academy’s prestigious William G. Shafer Award. Dr. Peters is one of the main authors of the 8th edition of Oral Pathology for the Dental Hygienist textbook. In addition, he has published in numerous journals including The Journal of the American Dental Association, Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology, Journal of Endodontics, Head and Neck Pathology, and Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, among others. He is the CLIA director for Geisinger Oral Pathology and has both a biopsy service and a clinical oral pathology/oral medicine practice at Geisinger.
